******Introduction to the Lathe, Box making, and spindles****
This course is designed for the novice hobbyist or woodworker who wishes to understand and use the lathe. It is also useful to those who are trying to decide what to look for in the purchase of a lathe and tools. The course will demonstrate machinery, tools, and an understanding of wood as a medium for turning.
Topics to include:
Using a One way sharpening jig, the basics of sharpening, honing, polishing, and burnishing for cutting and scraping tools.
-Orientation to lathes and lathe types- A demonstration of the tools used- a discussion of the selection, preparation, and stabilization of wood- properties and understanding of wood - Types of turning- Demonstration of spindle and faceplate turning. - Safety issues discussed and demonstrated- and finally a discussion of suitable finishing materials.
After basic instruction in cutting and scraping wood with grain running parallel to the lathe bed the student will practice cuts and decoration including the use of the sizing bedan, calipers, cutting and scraping tools, the texturing and spiraling tool, burning wire, friction and polish. The emphasis will be on tools and techniques as well as design elements, and copying methods. Embellishment techniques will be discussed.
Using these and newer techniques the student will learn to make decorative boxes with fitted lids. Each student should leave with at least one box.
During the afternoon section there will be supervised hands-on sessions at the lathes for students to practice making spindle-turned key fobs to be given to the “Susan G. Komen For The Cure” breast cancer awareness program. This exercise will develop and practice the skills involved in spindle turning and be a valuable contribution to the community. Each student will make a lidded box to take home
All materials will be furnished
Skill level- all levels
Maximum number of students-3

********Bowls And Platters and ladles ************
Demonstrations of obtaining a bowl blank from a tree trunk by chainsaw, bandsaw, and splitting. Stabilization techniques of boiling, air drying, and alcohol soaking will be discussed and demonstrated. Students will then mount, turn, and reverse turn a bowl, and each student will take home a bowl and understand all processes from the tree to the finished bowl. A small decoratively turned platter will be made by the demonstrator and by the student. Unless the student wishes to bring a special or meaningful bowl or platter blank, all materials will be included.
- Using a unique technique these wooden ladles are produced on the lathe. The bent handle type is made without steam bending. And they are made from common lumber without glue. They are fully useful and non-toxic cookware, or decorations. The process will be demonstrated.

******Wooden female forms and embellishment **********
These ladies are mostly formed on the lathe using a second axis, sculpting, hollowing, boring, and embellishment. Students may explore pyrography, painting, carving, eggshells, etc these female forms are a good subject for 3-dimensional freeform work. The figure will be demonstrated and then the student will turn and decorate their own. These involve multi-axis turning, boring, hollowing, carving and sculpting, pyrography, airbrush technique, and embellishment techniques. Each student will take home a finished figure.
Skill level-must finish introduction to the lathe or be an advanced beginner or above
Time - 9am to 5pm
Number of students- 0ne (individual instruction)
Cost- $90.00 all materials included

Two types of wooden pens will be demonstrated and each student will take home 2 handsome, retractable ballpoint pens (an American slim and a euro style). The student will learn to use a lathe, lathe tools, pen mandrel, barrel trimmer, Pen kits, different bushings and finishes.
Students will make 3 wine stoppers. The first is a laminated stopper with polished stone cabochons on deluxe chrome and silicon stopper, the second a solid wooden design on a peg and silicon insert, and the last of cork on solid wood
Skill level-any skill
