Frequently asked questions

1)Who would my instructor be??
For the forseeable future Bill Dotten, the studio artist and owner will be the instructor
Persons with particular experiences might be brought in for special aspects.

2)What tools and supplies should I bring with me??
Unless you wish to become familiar with your own set of tools, or want help forming and sharpening them, all tools needed will be supplied.
Unless you want to use a particular unavailable wood which you must bring with you, all
the wood for the scheduled project will be supplied.

3)How big are the classes ???
Introduction to the lathe, elements of design, and demonstrations may be of
larger size, however in order to provide the greatest safety and individualized
instruction the ordinary workshop classes will be limited to 3 students.

4)Is there any danger of personal injury ??
YES. failure to follow safety procedures, or use safety equipment provided, or to practice correct procedures could result in harm. You will be provided protection
for breathing, hearing and vision. Safe procedures will be described and/or demonstrated.
If you have dangerous medical problems or are allergic to any wood species please
discuss it with me (Bill Dotten.)

5)What should I wear ??
Fast answer- old clothes and shoes.   This is a dusty environment with flying shavings.
You may wish to cover your hair. shirts which do not come up snugly to the neck will admit lots of shavings down the shirt front
You should avoid loose clothing, neckties, necklaces, rings or scarves and any jewelry which might become caught by the machinery. A turning smock is expensive but would be
ideal. A shirt should not have a breast pocket. A properly sized T-shirt outside of
the waistband, (if long tailed enough) will cover pockets on pants. Shoes with velcro fasteners, fuzzy shoelaces, of textured surfaces should be avoided
Even on lecture and discussion sessions do not wear nice clothes. I try to keep a clean studio -But- that is a relative term in a wood shop.
